Wexner Center for the Arts Calendar Redesign
For 30 years, the marketing and design teams at the Wexner Center for the Arts worked on a bi-monthly calendar of events. Unique in its square format, it was one of the core pieces of the institution that kept people informed of the latest events and news of the center. With the onset of COVID-19 and lengthening uncertainty about in-person events, a pivot was needed.
The new magazine, titled In Practice, shifts the focus from advertising events to the “how” of contemporary art. Redesigning a publication with a 30-year history required a deliberate and methodical process. The folded size of the magazine stayed the same (8.5” x 8.5”) as the calendar, but white space and readability are now prioritized over maximizing event advertising. Flexibility was key in the design so that it could grow with the center into the future and give the design team opportunities to highlight the capabilities of print (see above for the variable four cover designs of the first issue).
